FUTTSU, Chiba — In a symbol of its wish for the coronavirus to disappear, Mother Farm in this east Japan city has started an event in which its sheep come together to make the shape of Amabie, a “yokai” spirit believed to ward off epidemics.
The Amabie formation is one part of the “sheep’s great evening advance,” which visitors can observe during the Chiba Prefecture facility’s “summer night farm” event. At the signaling of staff, some 250 sheep appear and merge toward a corner of the pasture.
They then start eating the food left out for them in a set pattern, and the Amabie shape emerges from the way they stand. Once the Amabie became apparent, the families and couples watching the show applauded the animals.
The summer night farm will continue daily until Aug. 16, and also takes place on Aug. 22 and 23. Fireworks displays are also planned.
