Takeaway food can present a risk of coronavirus infection, an expert has claimed.
Shannon Medical Centre GP Dr Yvonne Williams explained that in certain circumstances, fast food can present dangers.
She told Sean O’Rourke on RTE Radio One: “If the proper infection control measures aren’t being followed then there is a risk.
“If someone prepares food and then sneezes on it and you pick it up and eat it, you’re in trouble. It won’t survive on hot food as long as it will on cold food.
“You need to be careful if you continue to get takeaways.”
However, Dr Williams insisted that the risks can be mitigated with some simple safety precautions.
She added: “If you’re ordering food it’s worth checking if they are wearing gloves, are they wearing masks, are you happy that, if you’re handing a card in rather than cash, that they’re dealing with it properly, and that you’re happy with how it’s being prepared.
“If you’re not then take precautions. Maybe make sure that one person handles the takeaway container carefully and that you put the food onto your own dishes at home and then dispose of them carefully, wash your hands and you’re minimising your risk.”
